UITA Event to Bring Renowned Business Author Clayton Christensen to Utah on July 15

Author of “The Innovator’s Dilemma” and “The Innovator’s Solution” to teach business leaders to expand and outpace their competition by being “disruptors”

SALT LAKE CITY, June 1, 2004 – On July 15, a Utah Information Technology Association (UITA) event will bring world-renowned business expert Clayton Christensen, Ph.D., author of “The Innovator’s Dilemma” and “The Innovator’s Solution,” to Salt Lake City. Dr. Christensen, a professor at Harvard Business School, will make an exclusive 90-minute dinner presentation to UITA members and the extended technology and business community at the Marriott City Center with registration at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:00 p.m.

Presented by NextPage and sponsored by the extended technology and business community, this upcoming UITA event creates a unique opportunity for Utah business leaders to hear Dr. Christensen discuss how today’s companies can expand and outpace their entrenched competition by being “disruptors.”

According to Dr. Christensen, industry leaders pour resources into their core business. They listen to their customers. And in doing so, they get blindsided by disruptive innovations—new products, services, or business models that initially target small, seemingly unprofitable customer segments, but eventually evolve to take over the marketplace. This is the innovator’s dilemma—and no company or industry is immune.

“Innovation is a critical factor in growing and building any business. Utah has a strong background in Information Technology and innovation. We welcome the opportunity to hear Dr. Christensen’s superb insights on the process of disruption and innovation at this upcoming event,” said Greg Butterfield, UITA chairman and president and CEO of Altiris.

In addition to UITA, the event is also supported by the leading business organizations in Utah, including Utah Life Science Association, Salt Lake Chamber, MountainWest Venture Group, Economic Development Corporation of Utah, the Provo/Orem Chamber of Commerce, and Utah Valley Entrepreneurial Forum.

“This one-time presentation marks the first time that the extended technology and business community of Utah has joined together in support of a single event,” said Richard Nelson, president and CEO of UITA. “The collective partnership efforts of these organizations will make this a tremendous community-building event.”

Nelson also noted that Dr. Christensen has extensive background in Utah—prior to his studies at Oxford University and Harvard Business School, Dr. Christensen earned his bachelor’s degree with honors in economics from Brigham Young University.
